Evaluation of environmental investment “HISS™” at Zellstoff Pöls AG

In 2020, Zellstoff Pöls AG made the investment to commission a sootblowing solution that were to be installed on all 86 of their sootblowers. The system had its startup in the beginning of 2021 and the project evaluation has now been finalized and it revealed incredible results.

The High Impact Sootblowing System (HISS ™ ), developed by Heat Management has garnered wide popularity in the Swedish pulp and paper mill industry. The technology has become a market leader in Sweden.

Cellulose Pöls AG are the first in Austria to implement the system in their mill, and they are beginning to reap the benefits. The potential with implementing HISS ™ is beyond technical specification but some potential benefits nearly include halving the time and steam used in the sootblowing process and prolonging equipment life.

The goal with the installation of HISS ™ was to reduce sootblowing steam consumption by at least 30%, using the saved steam to supply 1/3 of the increased demand for the new PM3.

The identified results are as listed below :

  • 36-41% reduced sootblowing steam consumption.
  • 1,5MW increased electricity generation, which corresponds to 12.75 GWh annually.

Christian Perschler , Project manager for Zellstoff Pöls AG says :

In the final evaluation of the HISS™ system, we have been able to measure results that with a good margin supersedes the guaranteed values, making it easier to reach sustainability goals while also taking our production of renewable power to new lengths.

HISS™ – Sootblow more, with less steam.

The patented High Impact Sootblowing System (HISS™) disrupts the “how we have always done it” approach to energy intensive steam sootblowing. By operating the existing steam sootblowing system in a smarter and less wasteful way, half the steam and half the time can be saved. This leads to increased boiler efficiency, availability, and lifetime without installing any new sootblowers or rebuilding the boiler.
