Holmen Workington Paper Mill improved sootblowing efficiency on its biomass fired 150 MWth Andritz BFB boiler by installing Heat Management’s HISS Advanced system on 37 steam sootblowers.

The project reduced sootblowing steam consumption by 45 % per cycle, from 11.4 to 6.3 tons, while cutting the sootblowing cycle time from two hours to one hour. Operating data also showed approximately 1.0 MWe higher average generator power at similar fuel consumption and a measured boiler efficiency increase of 0.62 percentage points.

Since installation, Holmen Workington has reported stable boiler operation, reliable HISS automation and actuators, and no known tube leaks or unplanned boiler downtime. The case study presents verified results from a full scale HISS installation on a power boiler.
