Wien Energie Spittelau improved sootblowing efficiency at its waste-to-energy plant in Vienna by installing Heat Management’s HISS Advanced system in 2024. The plant operates two 44 MWth Hitachi Energy boilers, each equipped with 12 retractable steam sootblowers in the superheater section.

The installation reduced total steam consumption per sootblowing cycle by 40%, from 3.58 to 2.15 tons. During the sootblowing phase itself, steam consumption decreased by 46%, while the superheater sootblowing cycle time was reduced by approximately 50%.

Operating data showed stable flue gas temperatures following installation, indicating that boiler cleanability was maintained despite significantly lower steam consumption. The system also enables one-way and overlapping sootblower operation, with a lower expected risk of condensate-related tube erosion. The case study presents verified results from a full-scale HISS installation on a waste-to-energy boiler.
